Our Story

Jesus “Chuy” Gutierrez and Javier Gil were both born in the state of Michoacan, Mexico. These Mexican “pisano’s” both shared a vision of bringing Mexico to Reno. Together with their wives, Maria and Kristen, they present you Mari Chuy’s Tequileria y Botanas. Reno’s first Tequileria.

Working side by side, Chuy and Maria have been operating, top Mexican restaurants in the Reno/Sparks area since 2001. Their current successful restaurants, Mari Chuy’s Mexican Kitchen in Midtown and Mari Chuy’s Mexican Kitchen in downtown Sparks’ Victorian Square have led them to this latest venture.

Javier comes from a family of farmers/cattle ranchers famous for their cheeses. Currently his family grows agave and produces small batch, artisan tequila. It is these things that have brought Javier to this place today where he can share the passion for his heritage. Kristen’s 25+ years as a local Realtor and her eye for design made this project a perfect fit. Her love of cooking and travel brings a fresh perspective to our menu that we think you will enjoy.

It is important to them to bring the rich culture and history of Mexico and its revered spirit of Tequila to Northern Nevada. Tequila is one of the oldest spirits in the world, originating in central Mexico around 200,000 years go.

The food from our kitchen comes from their souls. Each dish has been created to please both your eye and your palate. From old world recipes of simple farm food to more sophisticated delicacies, we have something to please every taste.

They all have a heart of service for our community. Giving back to First Responders, Education, and others in need, is part of who they are. Mari Chuy’s has built a reputation of caring for their neighbors and their community.

We are pleased that you have chosen to dine and sip tequila with us. We hope that you will enjoy the experience as much as the food and drink.

Buen Provecho,
Jesus & Maria Gutierrez
